How to check a plumber yourself

GotAPal lists businesses from public records and does not check or vet them. Before you hire, do these checks yourself. They take a few minutes.

  • Boilers and gas appliances: check the engineer on the Gas Safe Register. It is the law for gas work in homes.
  • Work on your drinking water supply: WaterSafe lists approved plumbers.
  • If the plumber trades as a limited company, look it up on Companies House: check it is active and the name and address match.
  • Ask for their public liability insurance certificate and check the dates on it.
  • If they say they belong to a trade body, check it on that body's own website, not on the business's.
  • Get a written quote that lists the work, materials, price and when payment is due.
  • Never pay a large sum up front. Pay in stages tied to work done.
  • Ask for the call-out fee and the hourly or day rate in writing before they start.
  • Gas Safe Register: Check an engineer's licence number and the type of gas work they are registered for.
  • WaterSafe: A free directory of approved plumbers for work on drinking water supplies.
  • Companies House: search the register: Free to search. Shows whether a limited company is active, when it was set up and who runs it.
