What a handyman does, and doesn't

Odd jobs and small repairs

Typical jobs are putting up shelves and curtain poles, assembling flat-pack furniture, fixing doors and handles, small plumbing fixes like a dripping tap, and sealant and grouting. List everything you want done so it can be priced together.

Gas work needs a Gas Safe engineer

Any work on gas appliances or pipes must be done by an engineer on the Gas Safe Register. A handyman who isn't registered can't legally do it.

Bigger electrical jobs

New circuits, a new consumer unit and electrical work in bathrooms usually need an electrician who can certify the work. Ask before you book whether your job needs one.

Time or fixed price

Many handymen charge by the hour or half day. For a list of jobs, ask for a fixed price for the whole list so there are no surprises.

How to check a handyman yourself

GotAPal lists businesses from public records and does not check or vet them. Before you hire, do these checks yourself. They take a few minutes.

  • If the handyman trades as a limited company, look it up on Companies House: check it is active and the name and address match.
  • Ask for their public liability insurance certificate and check the dates on it.
  • Get a written quote that lists the work, materials, price and when payment is due.
  • Never pay a large sum up front. Pay in stages tied to work done.

Handymen: common questions

How do I find a handyman near me?

Pick your town from the list on this page, or search by postcode, to see handymen listed near you. Open a profile to see how to contact them. Or post your job free and we'll pass it to listed handymen near you.

Can a handyman do electrical or gas work?

Gas work must be done by a Gas Safe registered engineer. Small electrical jobs like changing a light fitting are often fine; new circuits, consumer units and bathroom work usually need a registered electrician who can certify it.

Does GotAPal check the handymen it lists?

No. GotAPal lists businesses from public records and does not vet them. Check a limited company on Companies House, ask for proof of insurance, and check any trade body membership on that body's own website.

Is GotAPal free to use?

Yes. Searching, contacting handymen and posting a job are free for you, and handymen pay no lead fees or commission. The only paid option is Top Pal featured placement, which is always labelled Featured.
