Getting your car fixed
Ask for a written estimate first
Ask for a written estimate before work starts, and ask the garage to phone you before doing anything that isn't on it.
Servicing
Ask whether the service follows the manufacturer's schedule for your car, and get the service book or digital record stamped.
Old parts
You can ask for the parts that were replaced to be given back to you, so you can see what was done.
MOT and repairs together
If your MOT is due, many garages can do the test and any repairs. You don't have to have the repairs done where the test was, but a car with a dangerous fault can't be driven away until it is fixed, and a cheaper or free retest only applies within 10 working days.
How to check a car mechanic yourself
GotAPal lists businesses from public records and does not check or vet them. Before you hire, do these checks yourself. They take a few minutes.
- If the car mechanic trades as a limited company, look it up on Companies House: check it is active and the name and address match.
- Ask for their public liability insurance certificate and check the dates on it.
- Get a written quote that lists the work, materials, price and when payment is due.
- Never pay a large sum up front. Pay in stages tied to work done.
- Ask for a written estimate, and ask to be phoned before any extra work is done.
- Companies House: search the register: Free to search. Shows whether a limited company is active, when it was set up and who runs it.

Car mechanics: common questions
How do I find a car mechanic near me?
Pick your town from the list on this page, or search by postcode, to see car mechanics listed near you. Open a profile to see how to contact them. Or post your job free and we'll pass it to listed car mechanics near you.
Do I have to have repairs done where my car had its MOT?
No. You can take the failure list to any garage, then go back for the retest. A cheaper or free retest only applies within 10 working days, and a car with a dangerous fault can't be driven until it is fixed.
Does GotAPal check the car mechanics it lists?
No. GotAPal lists businesses from public records and does not vet them. Check a limited company on Companies House, ask for proof of insurance, and check any trade body membership on that body's own website.
Is GotAPal free to use?
Yes. Searching, contacting car mechanics and posting a job are free for you, and car mechanics pay no lead fees or commission. The only paid option is Top Pal featured placement, which is always labelled Featured.
