What kind of electrical job is it?

Small electrical jobs

New sockets, light fittings, switches, an outside light or a circuit that keeps tripping. Many electricians take small jobs; ask about a minimum charge when you call.

Fuse boxes, rewires and work near a bath or shower

GOV.UK says building regulations approval may be needed to "replace fuse boxes and connected electrics" or "change electrics near a bath or shower", and that "You do not need to get approval yourself if you use someone registered with a competent person scheme." Scotland and Northern Ireland have their own rules.

EV chargers and solar panels

Installing a car charger or solar panels is often done by specialist installers. GotAPal lists both.

How to check an electrician yourself

GotAPal lists businesses from public records and does not check or vet them. Before you hire, do these checks yourself. They take a few minutes.

  • Search the Registered Competent Person Electrical register (England and Wales), or the scheme the electrician names, on that scheme's own website.
  • Ask which certificate you will get at the end and who tells building control.
  • If the electrician trades as a limited company, look it up on Companies House: check it is active and the name and address match.
  • Ask for their public liability insurance certificate and check the dates on it.
  • If they say they belong to a trade body, check it on that body's own website, not on the business's.
  • Get a written quote that lists the work, materials, price and when payment is due.
  • Never pay a large sum up front. Pay in stages tied to work done.
